i want to have a serious talk about the next gen consoles, preferrably about the xbox one and the ps4
i want to factor in several things
such as price of games
DLC
microsoft
sony
developers
gamestop
used games
hardware
and software
one thing id like to say; i am a PC gamer, i dont have really a side in this, and i dont "Fanboy" neither have i jumped on any bandwagon.
i dont want to see any Xbone, watches you, burn, flame war, console war, damage is done, or any bandwagon BS from people who didnt even watch the reveal that made them butthurt after E3 a month later.
personally, the ps4 has good hardware, but not as many games that i would like to play that only exist on the PS4,
the xbox one, has good hardware, and only a handful of exlusives.
id still stick to PC tho.
lets start at E3, microsoft showed off some good games, i didnt care for the smartglass integration, i wouldnt have used the DVR, netflix or skype, since those can be used on PC, and have nothing to do with videogames.
sony showed off some impressive demos, most of which were multi platform like theif, and a few others. (and after doing some research i can vouch for this next fact), sony didnt do too well because of the sales of the ps3 and games during the last few quarters they had. hearing about the DRM, and how this would change things for all gamers, so to add to the confusion they made it a choice, deal with this new fangled technology, or have the same thing and beable to buy used games again. sony marketed an anti microsoft smear campagn, which was a good move for then since it brought more potential customers to buy the upgraded ps3 (if you look at the hardware, its basically just better cpu, better GPU, better ram, and a OS that COULD be written better.
back to microsoft, now i wasnt a big fan of DRM when i started to become a PC gamer on steam, but having a 1 day DRM check was a bit much, if they made it every week, it wouldnt have been bad at all. now the whole issue with the camera that ppl have brought up on the internet alot, microsoft is one of those companies whom ask for a warrent for each time the government asks them for something, and the warrent only covers one person. and as far as i know, prism software isnt in IE 10, so i doubt microsoft would compromise its console, because they wouldnt do that as a business company with their other software.
on to the DRM in closer detail
DRM, or digital rights management was made to combat piracy, and to enable developers to deliver updates more efficiently, and to beable to actually own your game and that developers could make more of a profit, allowing them to sell the games cheaper, and rely NOT rely on DLC sales to make a profit.
truthfully i dont like gamestop, they push used game sales, which isnt a bad thing because they are cheaper. but they offer so little for trade ins now, and the used games dont get the developers any bit of money, infact from the initial sale of the game, the publisher makes a cut, the developer makes a percentage, and the store makes a meager 10% or less on the sale, so gamestop pushes used games, which actually drives up prices of new games. (remember back in 2000 when games were around $30-$40?, back before gamestop, before used chain stores?) since 2000 game prices have almost doubled, and DLC is overloading the market, ($5 for skin packs, $20 for a handful of new quests, and $15 for 3 maps for a game?) seriously! it is kinda BS.
personally Microsoft had a good idea to attempt adding DRM to consoles and to try to prevent what i believe might turn into a console market crash (see aliens:coloniel marines, and several other crappy games being sold and flooding the market).
i personally believe that microsoft was trying to fix the messed up system that currently exists today in the retail business of games, developers had to rely on online passes and DLC to make money to fund their next project, making incentives to buy games new (Pre order bonuses), etc just to make it profitable to develop games.
it was confusing, and it was microsofts fault not explaining in detail what they were doing, as it DID at the time of the reveal to be a 50-50 chance of it being terrible. tho with how quick they made the patch to delete the DRM, it seems that they would have done that anyway at the end of the consoles lifetime, opening it up for used sales AFTER or NEAR the end of its lifetime.
i dont care about netflix or skype, as i would have had a gold account anyway, and i dont use those things to begin with, both consoles require you to pay to play online, which allows better security for the consoles online play, both make it so you can no longer use dial up to connect to the online service (which my friend did with an xbox 360)
now i will buy an xbox one for project spark, and to use for anything that may interest me down the line. (as i dont want to use windows 8....)
everything at this moment with the console war has been blown out of proportions, too many bandwagons, too many ppl who dont understand the deep details of both companies.
Truth be told, both consoles; now that the kinect is no longer required for the xbox one, are exactly the same, a xbox 360 with better specs, and a ps3 with better specs.
it is like a PC, but still with a console, you expect something new, and atleast with PC, we have Oculus rift coming in soon.
give ur honest opinion, no flaming, no console war memes, no damage was done or fanboy crap, or else you will invite others to neg vote you, or involve staff on this (as it has happened on IGN with this console war)
and yes, to include the Wii-u in here, i like it, ill buy it for a few nintendo titles and a ton of 3rd party games that are better than nintendo IP.
