I do not think having guns everywhere in the hands of citizen will prevent crime, it will only increase unnecessary deaths.
This is a demonstration of our humanity's greatest weakness: FEAR
It is a direct response to fear of death, fear of property loss, fear of assault: Fear of Loss.
Decisions made under fear are typically followed by regret.
Fear is a natural strength... for animals.
If we as people, wish to announce ourselves as superior to animals, we must control our personal fears.
We were doing a good job, until a media blitz of propaganda rooted fear into our "modern" (hah, more like stagnant) culture.
Fear creates a cage, far worse then four walls... a cage of the mind.
Four walls represent nothing to the connected Otaku... who lives without fear.
But lets just say, someone cut the internet from me maliciously for fun. If I found this devious person... would I want to shoot him?
Personally... no... what would that solve? Would that bring my internet back? Would that prevent something of that nature from occurring again?
No.
You just have to come to the reality that loss is inevitable... many men (powerful men) over the course of time have tried to take it all with them...
They fail every time.
You can build a army to protect you and it will eventually topple.
You can build a giant wall, and observe the crafty ways people pass through it.
You can go through as much preventive effort as you can but the result is the same:
You rebuild... even if you have lost your life or the life of a loved one.
Please believe me on this, the ability to rebuild is nature's greatest gift and one of the definitive traits as the human species.
Even if you or a loved one is killed by someone, the physical laws dictate that energy can neither be created or destroyed... it simply is, and transfers.
So what do you have to fear?
What do I have to fear?
I fear a stagnant world, ripe with ignorance, that refuses to leave this rock... awaiting their 6th known mass extinction that may be self induced.
But even that is a meaningless fear... as that energy will be transferred somewhere else.
Now, philosophy aside:
- Police and military should carry guns
- Hunters and gamesmen should be allowed to own as many guns as they need, and hunt on designated grounds
- People should be able to have as many guns (fear protection) as they want! They should be allowed to keep them in their homes or property bounds.
- Anybody should be allowed to go to a Shooting Facility (target range) and have tons of expensive fun!
- I do not want loaded guns inside the belts and on the backs of non agency citizens inside my grocery store, theaters, workplace, park, streets, arcade, where ever... even at the gun range before you go down range in a safe controlled environment
- I do not someone to profile me or my family and make a judgment call based on (their personal) fear that can cause permanent and irreversible damage.
- If some nut goes on a rampage, let the police or military stop him, you cannot (absolutely under any human circumstances) prevent bad things from happening to good people all the time... there is no way: you can only rebuild or cause damage to yourself and others.
