I was planning on backing up my 2TB Seagate Barracuda desktop hard drive when all of a sudden the hard drive suddenly stopped reading, the computer stopped showing the partition but the device still shows in bios, device manager and computer management, as a unallocated, uninitialized 4tb HDD!!
The hard drive when powered on sounds just like in this video that I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4uFMjL0Gi0
The harddrive simply beeps like in the video link whenever it is powered on exactly 11 times every time and stops. Can the hard drive still be revived? Some people suggest freezing it but would it make things worse? Has anyone experienced similar symptoms to their HDD?? I phoned a local "recovery technician" and he told me that data recovery service will be around $650 - $990 before taxes depending on the type of mechanical failure.
Right now I am not sure if I should follow through with such high recovery cost as the contents of the drive contains about:
1TB ---> Anime
500+ MB --> VN, Hentai, doujinshi, Manga, J-games. A bunch are also downloaded from this site whos links are now long dead.
100+ MB --> college stuff (from previous semester fortunately)
The hard drive was functioning perfectly before this and gave no weird sounds right up the the last minute it was used before breakdown. Since the hard drive was not subject to shock, I am thinking if its possible to fix it for cheaper, like sending the drive to a repair shop in hong kong for example. But I do not know any company outside U.S/Canada for affordable recovery.
Lastly, is there any practical method of backing up 2tb hard drives? even using blu-ray the lastest backup media seems unreasonable as it still takes a lot of them just for one drive.
Will freezing the HDD actually make it work in this scenario? at least long enough to get the data off. But I am also skeptical it may make things worse. Would you pay $1000 to save your entertainment collection?
