Ok, I just came upon another thread about Japan birth crisis. Then I look back to my clinical rotation this semester at OB unit. Well, here is something I don't understand. Why having children is such a big deal? From the stand point of a 26 years old, never married, no relationship, I don't see the point of having kids, or having MORE kids. Yet, some people are hysterical about it. Of all the body functions, the reproductive system has almost no effect on human's life. Sure you can die from testicular or cervical cancer, or STDs. But what happen if you don't have kids? Nothing. Sorry if I sounds like an insensitive prick (maybe that's why I can't become an OB nurse). I just can't understand it. I have attended a physician consult for a couple. Basically, the mom already has a kid, but there are many problems with her previous pregnancies, so getting pregnant is no longer a viable option. I try to empathize with them, but at the same time, I was like "well, you already have one kid, what's wrong with staying that way? Why getting all depress about not having another? It's not the end of the world like, say, brain cancer."
OB is often the place where I hear the most fucked up story. Yes, I don't use the F word that often, but after hearing some, I bet you guys can't help but saying "WTF, people?" I know some people SHOULD NEVER EVER have kids. Like a 16 years old almost suffocate her child because she was freaking busy texting. Or a woman, 10 kids, all go to CPS, have history of drug abuse (I'm talking about cocaine, heroine, etc), showed up with another pregnancy. Think about all the burden society have to bear for those waste of air and food, think about all my tax money to provide for those people. I can somehow empathize with the couple above, because they are successful, have a stable relationship and life, so they can expand their family a little more. But, FUCK, 10 kids and some people still want more? WHERE THE HELL did they get all the money to provide them with decent life? Yeah, right, my tax money, of course. Just think about how many people we can save from cancer, heart diseases, etc, etc with all the money pouring into those human-dumping machines. And yet, every one hail pregnancy as something precious that we should treasure. SHIT, how did we end up with 7 billions people on this tiny planet? Ever heard about shortage of energy, food and natural resources? Don't worry, it will come soon enough, because the estimated capacity of this planet is about 16 billions, and people are F-ing multiplying like bacteria. Don't they understand a simple fact that less people means higher quality of life? Think about all the things we can do/buy instead of pouring all the resources into F-ing kids.
